Reliability Analysis of IEEE 802.11p Wireless Communication and Vehicle Safety Applications

Authors:

Unai Hernández-Jayo and Idoia De-la-Iglesia

Abstract: In this paper we analyze the performance of IEEE 802.11p vehicular networks used as communication media to warn drivers about hazardous situations on the road. In particular, this paper is focused in three typical active safety applications which are based on the cooperation among vehicles and intelligent elements placed on the road. The reliability of these applications relies on the performance of the radio link among the agents involved in the cooperative scenario, so first we analyze the goodput, Package Delivery Rate (PDR) and delay of this link. Once the behavior of the media is characterized, the kindness of the safety applications is studied. These measures were carried out in real V2V and I2V scenarios using a compliant IEEE 802.11p prototype developed by NEC.

Efficient Coupled PHY and MAC use of Physical Bursts by ARQ-Enabled Connections in IEEE 802.16e/WiMAX Networks

Authors:

Oran Sharon, Amit Liron and Yaron Alpert

Abstract: In this paper we address an aspect of the mutual influence between the PHY layer budding blocks (FEC Blocks) and the MAC level allocations in the Uplink and Downlink of IEEE 802.16e/WiMAX networks. In these networks it is possible to transmit MAC level frames, denoted MAC PDUs, such that a PDU contains an integral number of fixed size Data Blocks. PDUs are transmitted over PHY Bursts, which are divided into FEC Blocks. We suggest an algorithm that computes the best way to define PDUs in a Burst in order to maximize the Burst Goodput. We also give guidelines on how to choose the best Modulation/Coding Scheme (MCS) to use in the Burst, given the SNR of the channel.

Real World Testing of Aggregation in Publish/Subscribe Systems

Authors:

Michael Schiefer, Christoph Steup and Jörg Kaiser

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks collecting data to monitor real life processes gain increasing attention from the scientific community. These systems promise ubiquitous computing in a digitalized world. However many problems need to be solved to achieve this dream. One of these problems is the limited battery power of the nodes and the limited bandwidth of the communication. Existing work tackle the problem of limited bandwidth by merging communication packets within the network. Based on this approach we investigate the use of application specific aggregation in publish/subscribe wireless sensor systems. We expect this approach to overcome overload situations in the network and decrease packet loss due to bandwidth exhaustion. This paper describes our architecture and evaluates the properties of our approach. We investigated specific topologies theoretically and through real-life experiments. Our results quantify the achievable event count and loss rate reduction.

Authors:

Katarzyna Kosek-Szott, Janusz Gozdecki, Krzysztof Loziak, Marek Natkaniec, Szymon Szott and Michal Wagrowski

Abstract: Network virtualization is one of the key concepts of the Future Internet. However, the use of virtualization techniques in wireless mesh networks has thus far not been adequately studied. In this paper we describe VIMENO: a Virtual wireless Mesh Network architecture for Operators, i.e., the first virtualization-enabled wireless mesh network architecture designed for operators. In the proposed architecture, virtualization is used to divide the mesh resources governed by a single mesh network operator among multiple virtual network operators. The advantage of this outsourcing approach is that each virtual network operator can focus on providing a service to its end-users, leaving the network administration to the mesh network operator. This leads to the lowering of the operating expenditure of virtual network operators and allows tailoring of each virtual network to individual operator and service requirements.

Energy Aware Routing in IEEE 802.11s Wireless Mesh Networks

Authors:

Maria Zogkou, Aggeliki Sgora and Dimitrios D. Vergados

Abstract: Wireless Mesh Networking is a continuous growing technology that can be used used for several application scenarios, such as military tactical operations, etc. in next generation wireless networks. The IEEE 802.11s Standard defines the procedures that wireless nodes follow in order to interconnect and create a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) mesh network. It, also, defines the routing protocol and the metric that are used by a IEEE 802.11s mesh network to route data. However, although the energy consumption of mesh nodes is a crucial parameter for the network's lifetime in specific purpose operations (e.g. military and health) the default metric proposed by the standard doesn 't take into account the energy of the nodes. In this paper, a new energy - aware routing metric for the IEEE 802.11s mesh networks has been implemented. Simulation results showed that the proposed metric prolongs the lifetime of a WMN in comparison with the the default metric used by IEEE 802.11s Standard while causing a little higher total delay in the network.

Authors:

Chong Hyun Lee, Youn Joung Kang, Jinho Bae, Seung Wook Lee, Jungchae Shin and Jin Woo Jung

Abstract: A novel moving object classification system using UWB radar and classifier based on decision tree structure are proposed. By using the proposed radar system, we construct UWB radar signal database by considering two movements and four moving directions of human and dog. The proposed classifier is based on non-linear support vector machine (SVM) using RBF kernel and use linear predictive code (LPC) coefficients as feature vector. By evaluating performance of the proposed decision tree structures, we obtain the best classification results when the first level SVM classifies type of movement and then the second level SVM classifies moving object. The correct classification probability ranges from 93% up to 97%. The proposed system and classifier can be used for efficient human and dog classification and can be applied to other moving objects classification as well.

Modulation-mode and Power Assignment in SVD-assisted MIMO Systems with Transmitter-side Antennas Correlation

Authors:

Andreas Ahrens, Francisco Cano-Broncano and César Benavente-Peces

Abstract: Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems can provide a noticeable improvement in channel performance. Nevertheless some perturbances affect the capability of this technique to get the expected improvement. Due to the use of multiple antennas at the same front-end and their close spacing the so called antennas correlation effect appears. Antennas correlation can drastically affect the channel behaviour by increasing the bit-error rate (BER) and dropping its capability. This paper analyses the impact of transmitter-side antennas correlation on the MIMO system performance. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is used to transform the MIMO channel into independent layers. Afterwards bit and power allocation techniques are applied in order to obtain the best performance.

Capacity Analysis of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks under SINR Interference Constraints

Authors:

W. Mansouri, K. Mnif, F. Zarai, M. S. Obaidat and L. Kamoun

Abstract: Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) are expected to be heterogeneous, which integrate different Radio Access Technologies (RATs) such as 3GPP’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) where a transmission is supported if the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver is greater than some threshold. In this paper, we analyze the interference in heterogeneous wireless networks and determine the capacity by taking into consideration the class of traffic of each call and considering both intra-network interference and inter-network interference. This analysis allows us to simplify the estimation of capacity under SINR interference constraints in different wireless networks.

Low Latency of Re-authentication during Handover - Re-authentication using a Signed Token in Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks

Authors:

Hassane Aissaoui, Pascal Urien and Guy Pujolle

Abstract: Wireless networks provide several advantages over wired networks. They offer: a satisfactory bandwidth, mobility, easy deployment in difficult areas, long-term savings and the speed more and more higher. However, they also have some disadvantages in regard to security, performances during re-authentication, execution of real-time applications and interference from other electromagnetic sources (Bluetooth, microwave, etc.). The existing solutions to reduce delays of Handover intercellular are specific solutions to a particular network or manufacturer of this technology. The main objective of this paper is to propose novel mechanisms based on digital signatures to obtain low latency re-authentication during Handover in Wireless Access Networks. Our infrastructure will be based on trusted relationship between the heterogeneous access points and the authentication servers, in order to allow the mobility anytime anywhere to any user, and the ubiquitous access to the Future Internet, while ensuring the right level of security to both the end users as well to the wireless networks. In this context, the main issues are to resolve the seamless Handover and the re-authentication during mobility of station. By using a signed token in our trusted infrastructure, we achieve a unique authentication and a fast re-authentication. Therefore, the requests to the authentication server are considerably limited.

On Providing Fair Performance in Adaptive Wireless Push Systems

Authors:

P. Nicopolitidis

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel method for providing performance fairness in adaptive wireless data broadcasting environments of push nature. In such environments, the performance of an application that runs on client devices and receives items from the broadcast channel is affected by both the number of these items and the pattern via which these are demanded by the application. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the fact that, irrespective of the above parameters, all applications run by the client will receive a fair allocation of bandwidth and thus will enjoy the same performance. It requires additional functionality only at the Broadcast Server and can thus constitute a simple and effective means for wireless data broadcasting providers to support performance fairness.

Prediction of Spectrum based on Improved RBF Neural Network in Cognitive Radio

Authors:

Shibing Zhang, Jinming Hu, Zhihua Bao and Jianrong Wu

Abstract: Spectrum prediction is a key technology of cognitive radio, which can help unlicensed users to determine whether the licensed user’s spectrum is idle. Based on radial-basis function (RBF) neural network, this paper proposed a spectrum prediction algorithm with K-means clustering algorithm (K-RBF). This algorithm could predict the spectrum holes according to the historical information of the licensed user’s spectrum. It not only increases the veracity of spectrum sensing, but also improves the efficiency of spectrum sensing. Simulation results showed that this prediction algorithm can predict the spectrum accessing of the licensed user accurately and the prediction error is only one-third of that of the RBF neural network.

Authors:

Paul Heiniz, Karl-Heinz Krempels, Christian Samsel, Kai Schwarz and Gökay Bodur

Abstract: Landmark-based navigation is one promising approach among the group of indoor navigation solutions. Using logical connections between areas in the building, users are able to follow a path via step-by-step instructions. This approach provides universally applicable navigation to complex buildings. However landmark-based indoor navigation requires a solid and reliable data structure which depicts regarded buildings. In this paper we present a tool for construction of such data structure. Using findings from prior experiments and well-established design principles and patterns, we were able to significantly improve the usability of the tool and lower the cognitive load of the user. Furthermore, the proposed improvements were integrated into landmark-based indoor navigation software to enhance the user experience and display a more familiar presentation during the navigation task.
